Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

I don't understand this task. Will you for example be adding on 3 seconds to my time for each 'A' press?

Video games ruined my life.

If I were to get 30"00 with 4 presses, and Nahoc were to get 35"00 with 3 presses, Nahoc would win.
No time is added on for button presses.

The compilation for Task 2 has been done since last night, but I'll be uploading it tomorrow due to the 70 Star run being uploaded today.

Hey guys, I'm a newbie to TASing (this'll be my first) so go easy on me when I get destroyed by you all haha.

Thanks for setting up this contest!

EDIT: Does pressing the A button on the star select screen count? (I forgot that B and start also worked and really don't want to get into hexing my m64 file)

Hi! I'm a newbie too and definitely going to give a try at the competition, hopefully I'll manage to appear in a compilation video atleast  tongue.

Anyways I don't think pressing the A button on the star select screen counts as the timing starts once you're inside the level.
I'm not sure though, so if I'm wrong someone please correct me since I did the same hehe.

Hi guys I'm new here and I'll try to participate in this competition as well.

I have a question though, is it necessary for us to use TAS input plugin for the controller? Or can we something else like the
Nrage plugin for the keyboard controlls or a USB controller?

Because yeah.., I'm still learning how to use TAS input. smile

Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

You can, but you will find it much easier to use the tas input plugin.  All you have to do is drag the red dot wherever within the circle and that will correlate to the direction Mario goes, and of course the buttons are indicated, checked means you pressed it, unchecked means you didn't.  just hit the '\' key to go into frame advance and you're set! Good luck!   big_smile

Even if you didn't do the unnecessary "A" rolls after dives, you still pressed "A" 3 times after slide kicking. Try researching before TASing. A simple look here would show you that you don't need to press "A" at all. I honestly don't know how anyone got any presses.

Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

Just a quick question about task 4. It says to collect any star in the game, I am not sure if that is misworded or not, so do you mean that I could get a star in Bomb-omb battle field, collect 6 blue coins in Bomb-omb battle field, and then go in the big painting of Tiny-Huge Island? Or am I restricted to Tiny-Huge Island only?

You must entry at first Tiny-Huge Island in big painting. From that point, you can leave the course, and select a other one.

Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

You must do it in this order:
- Start from the big painting in THI
- Get ANY 6 blue coins in the game (doesn't have to be in THI, but can be if you want)
- Collect ANY star in the game (doesn't have to be in THI, but can be if you want)

That's all you have to do guys. Pretty straightforward if you ask me.

Agreed, I think in the future we shouldn't explain things like this.  In my opinion this is almost handing someone an idea, where the spirit of competition is to be creative within the bounds of the task.  I think from here on out we shouldn't "explain" the task unless these criteria are met: (1) the task is so complex and misleading (unlikely), (2) there are an overwhelming amount of people who don't understand what is going on (almost like the 1st task, which is clear to me but didn't seem to be for others), (3) If something in the task description is impossible to do and is not brought to the attention of its creator (highly unlikely).  Nevertheless, in this event, if the correction is not made in a timely manner (at least four to five days after the task was posted) then we should be given a different task to get everyone on the same playing field.

Here are some things to remember when starting a task:
(1)Read the task description several times!! You don't need someone to interpret everything for you when the description of the task is clearly there.
(2)If you find a loop-hole but are still within the task's boundaries then YAY!! As long as you don't break a rule, you have every right to dispute your claim as to why your run is viable (you should only dispute after you have been told it's not viable).  If the coordinator is unsure if that run should be allowed we should have a vote on it before the final ranking and compilation videos are made.
(3)Be creative and have fun!!!

These are just my thoughts on the subject, please don't interpret them as anything rude or snide.  This seems to be the most logical course of action when facing something like this.  In my own opinion, I thought I had an awesome unique route, but unfortunately I do not think so anymore.

Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

Editing your re-records to be negative or anything like that is pretty dumb. What's the point of even showing them if you're just going to alter the real count. Yes, I am aware you can't prove re-record counts are real anyway, but I'd prefer a trust system over a system where everyone is like LOLOLOL DERP -52696969 re-records.

Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

Re-records are pointless information if you think about them.  I could spend 10 re-records and get the same result if I were to use 3000 re-records.  Some may think it shows people how "experienced" of a TAS'er you are if you use less re-records with a faster time, but that isn't true in my opinion.  Most of my re-records are from me trying one route and then testing another, which is the total re-records of two TAS'es of the same task.  I'm sure others are like that as well.  I don't hex mine back to 0 when I start over.  They are more of a personal source of information than anything.  But I'm fine with the way things are  because it all boils down to them being useless.  Who cares if you hex them, and who cares if you don't?

Edit:  They should however be used in single star/completion TAS'es.  They still aren't a need to know thing for the viewers but if you get a WR or do a completion of the game they should be noted by the author to convey the effort put into the run.  But for competition, if you care about conveying your effort you won't hex them anyways.  The opposite is true if you don't care.  As far as negatives go, it doesn't change the magnitude it's just something fun to do.

Thumbs up

Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

Re-records can show effort decently accurate... I completely disagree with you. It's a handy number to have around. Don't disregard it just because it isn't always absolute truth. You'd be sad to see if everyone does what sonicpacker does.

Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

Well, it's okay that you disagree with me, but when you lose or win a task you almost never jump to re-records first.  You most likely look at the time difference.  I can see where you are coming from when you want to compare your effort with someone else and look to see a completely fraudulent number staring you down.  This is frustrating while trying to break records because the run is most likely done before you attempt to beat it and you keep using more and more re-records just to match them.  However, in the spirit of a fun competition they serve no real purpose because every submission is completed more or less at the same time.  We all have 2 weeks to do a task and effort is portrayed more through completion time than re-record count.

Edit:  I guess what I'm saying is that while doing a task (something typically never done before) the effort is conveyed more through mentally thinking of a route and then re-recording to semi-optimize/optimize than it is by brute forcing a frame out of something that has already been done, which ups your re-record count through the roof.

I think we can just agree to disagree. Everyone has their own opinions.

Thumbs up

Re: TAS Competition 2012 Discussion

The rerecord thing I do is just for fun. The number is never drastically changed. I pick a "fun" number close to my real count. ie, if I had 650 rerecords, I might up it to 666 or 669, which as you know aren't very different numbers. There's nothing extreme about that. I don't "boost" it or lower it in anyway that alters people's perception about the effort put into the run. If I want to add a negative sign to a number that shows the effort I put in, then I don't see how that changes anything or makes anything misleading. I really don't care if some people think it's stupid because it's just a joke to get some smiles. Whatever the harm is in making some people happy, I don't see it.

Edit: Oh, and the results will be posted sometimes tomorrow. I had a busy weekend and wasn't able to time the runs quite yet. Task 5 is a co-op task so partner up and brace yourselves!! Thanks for the 100th post! wink
