Topic: 120 Star TAS

I have finally decided I am interested in helping with it. I mean A LOT of help. I only have 2 more EASY exams now, so I have TONS of free time, and I have understood that I enjoy TASing a lot more during the summer for some reason, so I now will TAS a lot more, and I have decided to put my efforts towards these things in order of importance:

0 star - 1st
120 star - 2nd
TAS Competition - 3rd

Basically, once the 0 star is finished, I will work a lot on the 120 star, because I'm sure many will join me and our standards should be VERY high! As people have said earlier, anyone can help with the 120 star. It's a huge project, so we need a huge team. Only top TASers will probably be useful in terms of optimisation though, because we have very high standards when it comes to these projects.

Before we optimize the hell out of something, we should make sure that we have tried extremely crazy strategies so that we don't have to redo things. I think we should get the Japanese TASers such as mamunine and Eru to help us and get their interest.

I think this topic can be used for posting strategies or ideas for people to test, and post all the fastest times, this way with a public topic like this, everyone can see everything and this very post (the first post) can be edited by moderators and myself to include IMPORTANT LINKS, such as WIPs. However, I also think that we should create some sort of private group on MSN for the top TASers who are good at optimising so we can easily discuss the actual TASing. Both route finders/testers and optimizers will be useful here. Since this group won't be casual chat, it needs its own group for organization. I will add people shortly.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts I had today, let me know what you think.

Re: 120 Star TAS

This is an awesome idea. Everybody can suddenly find an awesome route and help. I also like the fact that there will be a group for optimizers; that way, they can discuss angles, frames count, etc.

Looking forward to this.

I have come to a solution just now to this "I don't know if I'm good enough" stuff.

Prove it to us. Upload a star you've done that is very very well optimized, and then if it's well done, it's pretty obvious that you are a good enough TASer to invite. Sounds like a smart system to me at least.

I'm still brainstorming about organization and how to classify who's a part of the run, so give me some time and I'm sure with everyone's help we'll work a good system.

I think thinking thoughts is thoughtful.

Re: 120 Star TAS

Well I'd like to help too.AS SS said I also have two exams remaining and after these plenty of time.About what you(SS) said to Mario64Masters I have two single star TASes that I'll upload in a while.(The 1st is "In The Deep Freeze" 5"6 and the 2nd one "Whirl From The Freezing Pond" 13"07).I also had 5"57 for the first star but I deleted by mistake.I'm learning how to use MHS this period and I have improoved a lot at optimizing.

I'm willing to help smile

Re: 120 Star TAS

I know I'm certainly not the best player around, I'm not altogether terrible at finding glitches or weird routes. If I'm allowed, I'd like to brainstorm if I have an idea you guys might like. Off to the N64!

Re: 120 Star TAS

I know I am neither a very good TASer, but sometimes I find some new or alternate route. One example is SilentSlayers TAS competition task 30, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPGvyDzgYcE .
I would like to help with this project, so if I find something I think is useful or considerable, I will tell you guys in some way.
In a project this big it would be reallly fun to help.

A great way to get ideas from all random TASers or Speedrunners, like myself, would be to open a topic where everyone can tell their ideas about routes or planning. Just so you can say your opinion and the TASers of this project can consider the ideas or say that it won't work.

PS. How many frames is the WR from taking control of mario in the beginning of the game to get inside the castle? I will try find some optimazion with some new ideas of mine.

Well, considering you need to "start from reset" when creating a full-game run .m64...

We are very close to saving a frame at the lakitu skip. We are aiming to be touching the door at frame 1811 or VI/s 3805

It'd be great if people would help us try and achieve this. Here's the strategy you should use:

Re: 120 Star TAS

I think this is the best place to post this:

I am currently timing all the stars from Rikku's currently published 120 star TAS and it seems that the metal-cap would save 1'03"87 in JRB (over his run). Unfortunatly, me and SP worked on a route a while ago and needed to do SA (Secret Aquarium) way before JRB and then do the basement, get MIPS #2 and then get back into JRB room to do JRB.

I am just saying, but if somebody has a brilliant idea on how to avoid this, please tell us.

Re: 120 Star TAS

You're saying that route (doing SA, then basement, etc) is the one you came up with to get the Metal Cap before JRB?  And you are wondering if anyone else has an idea to do this in a less ugly way?  If so, I'll take a look and see if I can come up with anything!

Please, enjoy my channel.  It's truly beautiful.

Nahoc wrote:

Why not make a route that doesn't require that? Skipping the SA and JRB (even BBH and VCUtM) would still get you well over 50 stars by the time you finished the basement.

Re: 120 Star TAS

Why are you getting the Secret Aquarium then?  Why don't you just Skip the aquarium, go to BoB, go to SSL, go to HMC, get the Metal Cap, go to JRB, then get the Aquarium?

EDIT: Sorry.  Thought the aquarium brought you back to the lobby.  Looks like, get the aquarium, then do JRB is what would be faster.

This has nothing to do with self-esteem. I'm bored of SM64.

so, if this project still alive, who is gonna to organize
us?

We have a route already too, I think Nahoc has it saved somewhere.

Re: 120 Star TAS

i hear that japanese tasers will make a optimized 120 stars,
is that true?

Re: 120 Star TAS

Yeah, I have a 7 or so star WIP of theirs, but judging from it they aren't using the optimal route so meh.

Re: 120 Star TAS

I Think this run will be around 97 minutes.
How many stars completed?

Re: 120 Star TAS

^ The previous run was about 99 minutes, and that run is very old  (I forget the exact date, it was probably around  May 2007). Do you really think that in 3 years and 3 months with all these new discoveries (a 1 star run had not been done when that 120 star run was done), that only 2 minutes will be saved off of the final product?

It would be nearly impossible to make an accurate assumption, as I don't know what kind of crazy time savers these guys have found and have/have not released, but I will be very disappointed if only 97 minutes is doable. That would be like saving 1 second each star, not including time spent in the castle.

Re: 120 Star TAS

I thought that but i compared the two diffrent runs first 11 stars and the old run was five seconds quicker. Besides the old run is 99 mintes 39 seconds, close guess!

Re: 120 Star TAS

Old run was 99 minutes, and 2.13 seconds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBr1OmRgFFE

This above is the 120 star TAS, the current WR. You can't compare the first 11 stars here to a different run as I believe JRB will be done after obtaining the metal cap from down stairs. Using the metal cap saves a ton on this stage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqOk7TUdL-M

Here's one vid I found, of one star, and I'm not even sure it's optimized. This alone saves more than 5 seconds. The only way 97 minutes will be done is if they do a 10 minute freerun in the final Bowser battle after defeating him.

Anyway I'm not gonna keep posting in this topic, I'm just saying that 97 minutes will be killed.

Re: 120 Star TAS

OK

Re: 120 Star TAS

I say 10-20 minutes saved. Seriously there is 1 star where over a minute is saved..
