Nahoc's TAS Competition

Welcome back to the TAS Competition, now being hosted by myself.

Rules:

- At 12:00 AM EST at the specified due date (or before then) you are to submit one .m64 and .st to TASCompetition@live.com. Submissions that are late are ignored and rejected.

- The two files (.m64 + .st) should be compressed and named to "TASCompetitionTask#ByName".

Example: TASCompetitionTask1ByNahoc

- You may NOT talk strategy, show WIPs or finished products to any other people, even if they don't submit or compete.

- You may NOT co-author with anyone for a given task unless otherwise specified.

- Do NOT post in this thread; any posts will be deleted.

- Your .m64 should be recorded at the star menu unless otherwise specified.

- The task will be timed using the SM64.org TAS Timing method.

- Any violation of the rules makes you viable for DISQUALIFICATION and possibly further action if necessary.

The new scoring rule will make it easier to catch up and makes it overall a better competition. Basically, every 10 tasks, a total count of points from individual tasks will give you a place.

For example, if sonicpacker scored the most points in the first 10 tasks, then he'll get 10 real points. We will call each 10 tasks a round. So score as much as you can each round and you'll get the real points. The points you get from the task just give you a place at the end of the round.

Scoring scheme goes as follows (this includes a round):

1st: 10 points
2nd: 7 points
3rd: 5 points
4th: 4 points
5th: 3 points
Else: 1 point (this includes a round as well, so submit at least once!)

A tie results in the two sharing a spot, and the person just slower goes 2 spaces behind.

Example: SilentSlayers and Kyman get 1st, Blazesoul gets 3rd. If 3 people tie, then they go 3 spaces behind. etc.

CCless Stars

All right, so we've been stuck at 114 CCless stars for a while now (non-TAS), ever since Curtis? Discovered Blast Away The Wall was doable without a cannon. But what if I told you 115 was doable? To give you a hint, this is very similar to WDW's star 6. Any guesses? Well don't read any further if you want to find out yourself.

*SPOILERS*

The new CCless star is DDD's star 6, Collect the Caps. Basically, halfway through the tunnel, there is a loading point. See where this is going? Heh, I thought you guys would. What I needed now was something to take into the loading point, but I couldn't think of anything besides the shell. I kept trying, but the shell did not last nearly long enough to be able to take it into the tunnel.

But now things are different, I found a way to take the damn thing over there.

You know those small wooden slopes that lead onto the small strip of land? What you want to do is grab a shell, and swim up to them. Just before going out of the water, you want to press "B" and you will hopefully walk onto the land with the shell still in your hands. I think you have about a 5 frame window to do this at the most. If Mario flails his arms and ends up not having a shell, that means you pressed "B" too early. When you finally do this glitch, the shell music will keep playing, and you can now take the shell virtually anywhere. Even...the loading point.

So that's all there is to it, after swimming back and forth through the loading point, you'll eventually get the yellow star. Don't be discouraged if it takes you 15 minutes, as it took me 15, but you'll eventually get it. Once you do, simply press "B" to drop the star, and collect it. 115th star complete. It takes longer than WDW star 6, but at least you don't have to swim out of your way for air in this level. You can stay in the loading zone for as long as you need to.

Does this have any other uses? Yes. 255 coins is possible by cloning the red coins. Simply get a red coin in your hands, press "B", and you get +2 coins. There are 106 in the level normally, so you will have to do the glitch a minimum of 75 times in a row to get up to 255. For some reason I've never cloned a yellow coin, not even once. But it's not like you'd want to, I mean, the red coins take roughly half the time. Lets see where the coin totals are now.

BOB: 255
WF: 255
JRB: 104
CCM: 154
BBH: 151
HMC: 139
LLL: 133
SSL: 255
DDD: 255
SL: 255
WDW: 255
TTM: 137*
THI: 255
TTC: 128*
RR: 146*

Total = 2877.

* These courses should be in theory possible to get 255, but I don't think any have been done. If anyone has gotten more than the number indicated on any of these courses, please let me know.

So, now we are at 115. The remaining ones that have not been done on a console are:

Mario Wings to the Sky
Eye to Eye in the Secret Room
Into the Igloo
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Wing Mario Over the Rainbow

Any ideas for any of these stars? Well, I tried to get Into the Igloo by BLJing into one of the ice pillars beside the star, then just sideflipping out, but I never was never able to get enough speed to get in one of these ice pillars, much less actually stopping inside the pillar. This star seems like it will be gotten next.

WMOtR seems most likely impossible, TAS hasn't even gotten it yet. Clouds are far apart and there isn't much to work with in the level if you don't have caps or cannons.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow has been known about with TAS for a long time, but getting it with non-TAS would be insane. Not to mention if you mess up it takes over 2 minutes to get back. Not likely going to be done anytime soon, but we'll see.

Mario Wings to the Sky...this one probably won't be gotten, unless someone finds a way to get ridiculous height in this level, because that 5th coin is quite high.

Eye to Eye in the Secret Room would probably be gotten before the two above, but it doesn't seem like anything that has potential has arisen. I'd love to see this get done though.

Also please note that I'm talking about non-TAS methods for all of this.

Any other ideas? Feel free to post them here. Thanks.

Unlimited Coin Glitching

I think this glitch deserves it's own topic.

So far I believe Bob-Omb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress, and Wet-Dry World have been discovered to have glitches that let you receive infinite coins. If I missed any, please post below.

In BoB, you do the bob-omb glitch where you throw it and grab it right before it explodes. Then walk around until it disappears. Go around the bridge leading to the Koopa and elevator area and keep walking in and out of the coins draw distance and eventually a coin will appear in Mario's hands. It can be seen somewhere in this video (in this case to glitch the 100th coin making ABC x 0 for Star 7, possible in BoB).

In WF, you use a wooden box to do basically the same thing. It can be seen in a video that is played by Myles Bukrim, where he collects the max amount of coins (US version max. I think on the Japanese version you can get 999?), here.

In WDW, you use Chuck-Ya to accomplish glitching coins.
