How to Side-BLJ Like a BAMF

People have been asking for something like this for years. I figured I'd go ahead and make an entire topic on it. So.....letsa-go!

First you'll need MHS. Here's a tutorial by bobmario511 showing how to get it and how it works. The specific address you'll need is Mario's "facing angle." This value tells us exactly what direction Mario is headed. It's useful for many things, side-BLJs included. I've included other addresses as well. Though unnecessary to perform a perfectly angled side-BLJ, they're very helpful for optimizing.

Facing Angle: 00C26C1C (Type: Unsigned Short) - Tells us what angle Mario is facing.
Movement Angle: 00C26C16 (Type: Unsigned Short) - Tells us what angle the control stick is being held.
Speed: 00C26C44 (Type: Float) - Tells us how fast Mario is moving in a horizontal direction.

Now that we have everything ready, we can move onto the actual tutorial.

I've designated 4 directions towards each side of the room. North goes up the stairs. West goes to the door leading to the mirror room. South goes to Wet-Dry World. East goes to the wall with the blue picture. For this tutorial, the side-BLJ we will be working with is on the stairs leading up to the 50-Star door. Mario is going to be facing West and we will be pulling the control stick East as shown in this picture:

So we know what Mario is supposed to do. How do we do it? The first thing you need to do is find is an angle that's parallel with the stairs. Make Mario hug the wall just like this (this makes Mario parallel with the stairs):

Go into Mario cam by pressing "R" and let it center behind Mario. Once it's centered, press up on the control stick. That will cancel Mario's wall-hug. Next, go into frame advance and press down on the control stick for 1 frame. Take note of the value of Mario's facing angle (which should be 16384 like this if you've followed directions):

16384 is 100% parallel with the stairs (so is 49152, but that's irrelevant because we're BLJing West instead of East). As you probably know, in a side-BLJ you need to fall down the stair you're using every other frame. This means that a 100% parallel angle will not work for a side-BLJ. Instead, you need to find out what the closest angle is to parallel as possible without being 100% parallel. Since Mario needs to fall down the stair you're using, you need to slightly be facing the direction opposite of down the stairs (in this case, it's what I've labeled North in the first picture). Make Mario run in a direction that's both North and West (it doesn't need to be specific or exact) and take note if the value is more or less than the parallel value (16384):

As you can see in the above picture, the value changed to 7673 with my angle. Because 7673 is less than 16384, it means that we need a value that's as close to 16384 as possible while being less than 16384. The intervals for long jumps usually change by values of 10 (i.e. 16384 ---> 16374 ---> 16364 etc.) meaning that we need to subtract 10 from 16384. We've now found the angle we need to use for our side-BLJ: 16374 Our next objective is making Mario long jump with an angle of 16374. First, find the spot you'd like to start your initial long jump from and make a savestate. I recommend being close to the stairs or even on the stairs if you're a beginner. Next, run at an angle that's as close to possible to 16374. It doesn't need to be right on the number, but make sure it's as close as possible. You can use MHS to accomplish this. Hold an angle on the TAS Input and press frame advance twice (because there's a 1 frame delay in MHS). Keep testing angles until you get as close as possible to 16374. Do this for 3 total running frames. Don't forget to savestate after finding the correct angle for each frame! Mario should look something like this:

Something that many people don't know is that you can use "Z" when you long jump to change your angle very slightly. If you have experience TASing SM64, you know that you need at least 3 running frames from a stop to gain enough speed to long jump (hence the directions in the last step). After that 3rd frame, you press "Z" on the 4th frame and "A" on the 5th frame to successfully perform a long jump. Now that you've done the 3 running frames, you're going to click the "Z" box on the TAS Input. Next, you're going to hold an angle with that "Z" press and pay attention to MHS. Keep pressing frame advance twice and loading your savestate until Mario's facing angle changes to 16374. Once you've found the angle to hold, load your savestate, press frame advance once, and make a new savestate. Now, when you press "A," Mario's facing angle will be locked at 16374. Congratulations! If the directions were followed, you've successfully found a perfect side-BLJ angle and executed the first long jump of your side-BLJ.

All you need to do now is control Mario so he lands on the stair you're aiming for. You want him to hit it for 1 frame and then fall off onto the stair below (or the floor in my case). Optional: To optimize side-BLJs, you generally want to land with the maximum amount of speed that you can (-15.99xxx). This can be difficult, but it's worth the effort in the end. It isn't possible to teach you how to do it since it differs for every side-BLJ. The best advice I can give you is to just keep playing with random angles in the air until you get something close. It's a rather intuitive process so I can't really help you anymore than that.

Once you hit the ground, you're going to press "A" on the first frame you can while holding the lowest angle possible. You'll know it's the lowest angle because if you go one lower, Mario won't "stick" to the stair you're on and will instead do an air-BLJ.

As you can see, the minimum angle changes every BLJ you do:

Optional: Many walls in the game have a maximum speed that Mario can have before it resets to 0. The wall I used is one of those walls. Often, the speed is roughly -400. Similar to getting -15.99xxx on your landing, finishing a side-BLJ with ~-400 is an intuitive process and changes for every side-BLJ spot, so once again, I can't really help you on how to do it. Just experiment with angles during the BLJ. If your speed is too high and resets to 0, try going 2 or 3 BLJs back and changing your angles to be minimized in a forward direction (for this example, that would be West) instead.

After your final "A" press, don't forget to 0-input on the TAS Input for 4 frames!! This is a trick that preserves speed and prevents it from dramatically decreasing.

Now you have a really fast side-BLJ that you can do whatever the hell you want with. I hope this helps all of the people that were previously having trouble with side-BLJing. For me, this method has saved hours upon hours of unnecessary angle testing. Hopefully it will do the same for you guys!

Well, as Fares242 on youtube, if you go back to the early days where I was a hacker, there was a hack called
"Super Mario & Planet Stardust's Rampage":

As you see, this hack was in the original sm64 levels but with different star acts & some texture editing. It also has a new story line if you read the texts.
The new game is a COMPLETE REMAKE OF this old mod which will feature:
-All new custom levels
-All new music
-The same story line slightly edited
-100 power stars needed to enter the final (as the case in the old one)

This hack is not in progress yet. Although, I have a sketchup model (not texturized) that was aimed to be a course in my current hack "Super Mario-The Power Star Journey", that level is now decided to be course 1 of this new upcoming hack.
This hack will start after "Super Mario-The Power Star Journey" is finished & released.
When this hack starts its progress, I will post a topic in the name "Super Mario & Planet Stardust's Rampage" here.
It will include the preview video of course 1 when uploaded. It will hold the site of the hack which will be created as soon as I start the project.
